Creating Community in the French Classroom

Hi there!  The beginning of the school year is an exciting time but for some students it's filled with anxiety and fear.  As teachers, we always work at making our students feel as comfortable as possible so that they will willingly answer questions when called upon and participate in the conversations and lessons of the day.

As French educators this is particularly important so that our students will "risk" making errors while using the French language that they have in their skill set. So, how do we make our students feel comfortable?  Interactive activities in the class really help with this.

It can start with large group activities or even by working in pairs. Activities like the "zipper" talked about in a previous blog post of mine is ideal for this. (see May 30, 2023)  I have also found task cards to be great ways to help "break the ice" with my students.  Here are some resources that I have put together that might be just the right thing to use in your classroom!  All of them focus on listening and speaking skills!

1.  Ice breaker task cards

2.  la révision task cards

3.  la révision task cards #2

4.  un jeu de dominos

5.  People bingo/LOTO

6.  People LOTO - verb tenses version

Christmas in July?

Are you a Christmas in July fan?  If you are, you probably know how many months or days it is until Christmas 2024.

My Christmas in July is not about the December festivities but instead the joy of being able to relax and enjoy the outdoors, gardens, and free time activities that July and sunshine has to offer.

School calendars vary so much and although most schools in my area are not scheduled to go back in until September, I know there are many that begin again in August.  And school planning has already begun!

Do you have a unit that you always start your year with, one that allows you to do some evaluating of your new students French language skills? Have you ever thought about using a unit highlighting the Tour de France? I have some resources that will allow your students to begin their school year practising research skills, speaking and writing skills along with learning about this amazing world cycling race. It's the perfect event to highlight French culture while also highlighting international athletes around the world.

Just click on the images above to have a closer look at what each resource includes! All of these products have been updated for the Tour 2024 where there were some amazing results of athletes of the world.

 Bonne journée!

French End of Year Activities

Wow! This year has gone by quickly! That being said, this is a great time to do activities with your French students that help bring together the many aspects of French learning that have taken place in your class. Hands on activities are always a great choice. Here are 5 activities that you can use that are interactive, will help students review for final projects or for final exams.

1. Verb Tenses Review Game: this follows the rules for Snakes and Ladders. Go UP on the Arrows & Slide DOWN when you hit a snake.  A variety of boards are included with different levels of infinitives on the boards. You choose the Verb Tenses to be reviewed.

2. Review Task Cards - These can be done as a written or oral activity to practice a wide variety of topics. Main topic areas included are: school in the future, inventions, likes, dislikes, present day school, outdoor activities, national parks, modes of transportation, the environment, clothing, sports, athletes, music, music styles, musical instruments and more.

These can also be shown on the class screen and made it into a groups competition game.

3. Review Task Cards - These can be done as a written or oral activity to practice a wide variety of topics. This set of task cards includes these topics: age, dates, weather, seasons, sports, pastimes, person descriptions, music, food, beverages, family, geographical locations, school subjects, friendships, colours and more.

These can also be shown on the class screen and made it into a groups competition game.

4. A printable board game that is played in small groups. Sample answers are included to allow students to check their own work as they move around the board.

Topics are: la musique, l’école, les activités et les passe-temps, les moyens de transport, les aventures de plein air, la mode, les sports & more.

5. Another printable board game that is played in small groups. Sample answers are also included to allow students to check their own work as they move around the board.

French mots croisés and mots cachés

There are always those times when you need to have something to "fill in" a time slot within your French class lessons.  A great way to do this is with mots croisés or mots cachés.  They work well with a variety of classes, grade levels or ability levels.

When can I use these? ... you may be asking yourself.  --- Here are a few ideas for you:

  • 1. early finishers
  • 2. for a substitute teacher if you are away from class
  • 3. as class start ups while your class settles and you take attendance
  • 4. when your lesson finishes early -- and YES that does happen from time to time
  • 5. when the technology that you wanted to use is not working
  • 6. as a supplement to your themed lessons about a particular French unit
  • 7. on test day for students who finish writing their test before the allotted time frame

I have put together a product line of resources with mots cachés and mots croisés with vocabulary included to help with these scenarios. You may not have the time to make these kinds of activities on your own as you focus on the initial French lessons for your students.

Here are a few to look at:

Other themed areas include the following:

la Suisse

le Sénégal

Madagascar

Paris, France

la Belgique
